asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give particulars of postal, telegraph and telephone services for 1962-63 and 1963-64 in the terms of the replies to Questions No. 32 of 6th May, 1959 and No. 35 of 9th March, 1961.

The information required by the Deputy is as follows:

(a) Statement showing for the Telephone Service percentage increase over 1947 in (a) telephone traffic, (b) subscribers, (c) mileage of trunk circuits, and (d) numbers of staff, for the years ended 31/12/1962 and 31/12/1963.

NOTE:-Final results for 1963/64 are not yet available. In particular various salary and wage claims involving retrospection being dealt with through the Conciliation and Arbitration machinery could result in considerable additions to the expenditure appropriate to the year. (The estimate given above takes into account the increase of 12% granted to Civil Servants, the increase given to Sub-Postmasters with effect from 1st February, 1964, and the increase given to Post Office Clerks with effect from 1st October, 1963).

(2) The following table shows on the bases requested the amount expended under the Telephone Capital Acts in the year 1962/63. Estimated figures for 1963/64 are also given.

The total expended in the various categories does not correspond with the amount expended under the Acts as it is affected by the extent to which stocks of capital stores are run down or augmented. The amounts in each category have been expressed as percentages of the total cost of telephone capital works.

(3) The following table shows for each service in respect of the year 1962-63 the total salaries and wages charged as expenditure, expressed as a percentage of the total receipts, credited as income in the commercial accounts. The figures shown in respect of the year 1963-64 are based on the estimated results shown under (b) (1). Salaries and wages of staff engaged on capital development and renewal works are excluded as these are covered in the commercial accounts by interest and depreciation provisions.
