Vol. 208 No. 10

Written Answers. - Provision of Building Sites.

109.

asked the Minister for Local Government the statutory provisions which enable housing authorities to acquire land by means of a compulsory purchase order for the purpose of providing building sites for persons building houses with the aid of local authority loans; and if this power can be exercised in an order which does not relate to land required for local authority houses.

Housing authorities are fully empowered under the Housing of the Working Classes Acts and the Labourers Acts to make compulsory purchase orders for the acquisition of land for the purpose of providing housing sites for sale or leasing to public utility societies or private persons, including persons who may wish to erect houses with the assistance of loans under the Small Dwellings (Acquisition) Acts. Compulsory purchase orders can be made specifically for that purpose. The relevant statutory powers are contained in section 8 of the Housing (Ireland) Act, 1919, and sections 31 and 35 of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1952.
