Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Insurance Contributors in Drogheda and Dundalk.

6.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the towns of (a) Drogheda and (b) Dundalk (1) the number of persons, giving males and females separately, holding insurance cards on 1st January or nearest available date in each of the years 1957 to 1964, inclusive, (2) the number of persons in each of these years who ceased to be employed contributors because their yearly income exceeded the insurable limit, (3) the number of voluntary contributors under the Social Welfare Act, 1952, in each of these years, and (4) the latest unemployment figures, giving males and females separately.

With regard to part (1) of the question, data are not available for the number of persons holding social welfare insurance cards who reside in any particular area of the country. It is, however, possible to state the number of social welfare insurance cards exchanged and issued in each insurance year in respect of each local office of the Department of Social Welfare, though it must be noted that changes in administrative procedures may, from year to year, involve variations in the number of cards exchanged at any particular office. The figures for cards exchanged and issued for the Drogheda and Dundalk employment exchanges include both those handled by the staff of the exchanges and by agents of the Department for whom Drogheda and Dundalk are the appointed offices. These totals include, therefore, returns for a considerable area outside these towns. With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the number of insurance cards current, exchanged and issued, in respect of the Drogheda and Dundalk employment exchanges, for males for the insurance years ended January, 1957, to January, 1964, and for females for the insurance years ended July, 1957, to July, 1963.

The information requested in parts (2) and (3) of the question is not available. If, however, the Deputy would care to address a question to the Minister for Social Welfare it may be possible, from the records of his Department, to extract data in relation to part (3).

With regard to part (4) of the question, the available information is also contained in the circulated statement. The live register return, which gives the data by area of residence, relates to the last Saturday of each month and distinguishes only between men and "others"—the figures for boys being included with "others".

Following is the statement:—
