Vol. 209 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beer Tax.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of tax proposed in the Budget which will apply to (a) white beer and (b) black beer, and the amount of estimated revenue expected from each class; and if he will consider removing the tax from black beer, known as the working man's drink, because of the increased burden on working families, which will result from this tax.

The increase in the duty on beer announced in the Budget applies to all descriptions of beer. The amount of the increase in relation to any particular description of beer depends on its gravity. For the vast bulk of beer the increase in the duty represents slightly less than one penny on the pint as sold.

It is estimated that the increased duty will yield additional revenue of £1,100,000 this year, of which £920,000 is expected to be derived from stout and porter and £180,000 from other beers.

I am not prepared to exempt stout or porter from the increase in duty.

Are those figures excise figures or customs and excise combined?

Yes, combined.
