Vol. 209 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Drivers.

49.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of mechanically propelled vehicles used by his Department, the number of drivers employed by his Department, and the steps taken to train such drivers; and if he will comment on the recent criticism of the lack of training facilities for post office drivers, and say what steps will be taken to improve the training of drivers.

The number of mechanically propelled vehicles used by my Department is 910 and the number of drivers employed, including reserve drivers, is 1,194. All learner drivers are given an intensive course of instruction covering all aspects of driving and minor repairs. Training facilities are regarded as fully adequate.

Mr. Ryan

No doubt, the Minister has seen the recent criticism in the Post Office Union Journal and, having regard to that and to the fact that these people are in a position to know, will the Minister consider improving the facilities?

I have read the report referred to by the Deputy but I am quite satisfied that the facilities available are quite all right.
