Vol. 209 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Schools Road Safety Courses.

50.

asked the Minister for Education if he considers that road safety is bound to become a greater problem in view of the rapidly increasing numbers of car owners; and if he will take steps to have road safety made a school subject from infant classes through all school curricula, and to see that a pass in this subject should be necessary for primary, intermediate and leaving certificates.

I have already established, after consultation with the Ministers for Local Government and Justice, an inter-departmental committee comprising representatives from each of our Departments to examine the question of road safety education in our schools.

Pending the submission of the report and recommendations of this Committee, I do not propose to make any statement on the matter other than to say that we have received the full co-operation of Managers and teachers in regard to the campaigns which were initiated recently.

Can the Minister give us any indication as to when the report may be expected?

The Committee was established only very recently.
