Vol. 209 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity and Telephone Cables.

33.

asked the Minister for Local Government what is the policy of his Department concerning the overhead distribution of electric power, telephone facilities, etc., by means of poles; in what circumstances it is considered desirable that these facilities be distributed by underground cable; and whether it is intended to extend the scope of underground distribution of these facilities in the future.

Having regard to my functions in relation to the preservation and improvement of amenities under planning legislation I would welcome the extension of the underground distribution of services where that course is practicable, particularly in areas of scenic importance. I cannot say to what extent it is intended to extend the scope of underground distribution of services in the future. Overhead wires and cables can in many cases be so located as to minimise injury to amenity.
