Vol. 209 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Medical Expenses Allowance.

6.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of his undertaking to the Dáil on 16th July, 1963, he has had examined the need for an income tax allowance for medical expenses in respect of serious and permanent illness or disability; and if it is now proposed to grant an allowance.

The Commission on Income Taxation recommended a tax allowance for vouched medical expenses in excess of £50 and up to a maximum of £300 where the disability or illness was serious and likely to be permanent. As was promised in the White Paper on the Commission's recommendations, the possibility of framing an effective and practicable scheme within the income tax system has been under examination. The Revenue Commissioners have been discussing various problems involved with representatives of the Voluntary Health Insurance Board. It will be some time before any definite conclusion can be reached.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say when finality may be expected in this matter?

I could not say. It will be some time before any definite conclusion can be reached.
