Vol. 209 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Urban Area Rights.

18.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the privileges or rights attached to an urban area which would not be attached to that area if it had not a separately defined urban district council.

The principal privileges and rights are the powers to elect an urban council which can raise a municipal rate, employ staff and administer local government services such as housing, roads, sanitary services, planning and so on, in respect of the area within the urban boundary.

Are not all these done by the county council now too?

And has not an urban area the added disadvantage that it does not get the agricultural relief of rates grant?

The Deputy's question to me was quite specific and I have answered it clearly.

So is my supplementary question quite specific.

The Deputy asked in the question what are the privileges or rights attached to an urban area and I have elaborated them.

None, is the answer; none worthwhile.
