Vol. 209 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry River Flooding.

17.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that considerable hardship and damage have been caused in recent weeks by the renewed flooding of the Brown Flesk River, County Kerry; that both dwelling-houses and farmland have been inundated; and that at least one road has been totally blocked by floods, necessitating the making of long detours by local residents bringing milk to the creamery or going to their places of employment; and if he will now take immediate action to relieve flooding danger in this area.

The problem of the drainage of the Brown Flesk has already been exhaustively examined. A number of proposals for the treatment of the river under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, have been carefully and sympathetically considered but even in the case of the least unattractive proposal the cost of the work would have been out of all proportion to the benefit. As the Deputy is aware the Brown Flesk was deliberately excluded from the drainage scheme for the River Maine catchment area in which it lies and I cannot take any further action in the matter.
