Vol. 209 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Discussions with French Foreign Minister.

18.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will make a statement on what matters will be discussed with the French Foreign Minister, M. Couve de Murville, during his coming visit to this country; and, in particular, whether this country's future relationships with the EEC and the possibility of increased trade between this country and France will be discussed.

The Government were very happy when M. Couve de Murville informed us that he could accept our invitation to pay an official visit to Ireland. His programme will include conversations with the Taoiseach and myself. Although no specific agenda has been fixed, his visit will give an opportunity for a general exchange of views and for discussions on matters of mutual interest including our relations with France and with Europe.

Are we to take it from the Minister's reply that the French Foreign Minister is to pay us a visit and that there is, as yet, no agenda— that it will be just a general discussion on matters of interest?

That is right.

Will the Minister say whether there will be a discussion on our relationship with the EEC?

There is no fixed agenda.

Will there be any discussion on the great disparity in trade as between this country and France?

Trade negotiations with France are due to take place in a few weeks.

Will the Minister tell him some of the facts about Ireland?

A few, and some not in the book.

Will there be discussion on our relationship with the EEC?

As I have said, there is no fixed agenda.
