Vol. 209 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Membership.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if there have been any recent developments concerning the application of Ireland to adhere to the European Economic Community, or if any approaches to the Commission are contemplated on behalf of this country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the negative.

Arrangements made in November last with the Commission of the European Economic Community provide for discussions, as required, on matters of mutual interest. As I have already informed the House, a discussion at official level took place on 13th March.

Our Mission in Brussels is, of course, in constant touch with Community activities.

Can the Taoiseach say whether consideration has been given to the idea of a separate treaty between this country and the Commission?

I do not know what the Deputy has in mind by a separate treaty. If he is thinking in terms of a trade agreement, I think any discussions of that kind would fall to be considered after the conclusion of the GATT negotiations which are due to start in the summer.

Has the visit of the French Foreign Minister, M. Couve de Murville, anything to do with our discussions with the EEC?

In any of these discussions, has consideration been given to the idea of association with the EEC?

Would the Taoiseach say whether or not the Government intend to ask for consideration of association by Ireland with the EEC?

I assume, therefore, the Taoiseach means the country would go all out for full membership?

Certainly.
