asked the Minister for Local Government the total mileage of roads and streets in the State, giving the information in respect of each of the following: (a) main roads, (b) secondary or county roads, (c) city streets and (d) park and institution roads.

The total mileage of public roads at 31st March, 1963, the latest date for which figures are available, was 52,137.

The following is a breakdown of the total on the lines requested at (a), (b) and (c) of the question:

Main (trunk and link) roads (excluding the four county boroughs), 9,739 miles; county roads, 41,117 miles; main (trunk and link) and county borough roads in four county boroughs, 795 miles; other urban roads, 486 miles.

The information requested at (d) is not available in my Department.
