Vol. 210 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cigarette Tobacco.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance what is the total revenue derived from imported cigarette tobacco sales in each year from 1950 to the most recent date.

As the answer includes a tabular statement I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.

The great bulk of the tobacco revenue is derived from raw leaf imported for manufacture into cigarettes, pipe tobaccos and other products. The duties on the leaf are collected without reference to end use and, accordingly, accurate statistics of the receipts from leaf used in the manufacture of cigarettes are not available. However, it may broadly be taken that such leaf accounts for about 90 per cent of the total yield.

The following table shows for the years in question the net receipts of duty from (i) raw leaf tobacco; and (ii) imported cigarettes.
