Vol. 210 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Apartheid in South Africa.

10.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether Ireland was represented at the recent meeting in London concerned with future concerted international action to end the evil of apartheid in South Africa, including proposals for economic or other sanctions.

The meeting to which the Deputy refers was not an intergovernmental one and, consequently, Governments were not invited to participate in it. Ireland was not, therefore, officially represented at the meeting.

May I ask the Taoiseach who convened the meeting?

It was convened by some voluntary organisation.

11.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether Ireland has taken any part in or conveyed its views to the special committee of the UN concerned with the question of proposed international action to end the evil of apartheid in South Africa; and what the attitude of the Government is to the proposals being advanced to this committee.

Ireland is not a member of the special 11-nation committee of the United Nations on the policies of apartheid of the Government of the Republic of South Africa nor was it considered necessary that we should convey to it our views on apartheid which are well known. The committee has heard petitioners and has studied a large number of memoranda from individuals and from various organisations. Ireland will have an opportunity of commenting on the recommendations of the committee when its reports are considered by the next session of the General Assembly.
