Vol. 210 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prefabricated Schoolrooms.

12.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the prefabricated schoolrooms being provided to relieve the shortage of accommodation in Dublin schools, the cost per room and the amount thereof defrayed (a) by school managers and (b) by his Department.

In the case of such classrooms the cost per room is about £800. The normal grant payable is two-thirds of the cost.

Mr. Ryan

Can the Minister state whether or not the school authorities must pay their portion of the cost before delivery, or is it cash on delivery, or are there credit terms and, if so, what period is given to the school to discharge their portion of the debt?

The arrangements for grants of this sort are in exactly the same position as grants for normal school construction.

Mr. Ryan

Is there any objection to a school's selling these prefabricated schoolrooms after the need for them has ended, the possibility in ten or 15 years being that, in some schools, at least, the need for this extra accommodation will not exist? Will there be any objection to sale?

The manager is given an undertaking that if the prefabricated classroom is no longer required in his school, it may be taken away by the Department and erected somewhere else. A certain amount of the local contribution will be refunded to the manager, depending upon the number of years the classroom has been used by him. I think that is very fair.

What is the life expectation of this type of school?

I am afraid I should have to refer the Deputy to my colleague, the Minister for Local Government, for technical information of that sort. I have not got it readily available.

13.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education the number and location of prefabricated schoolrooms erected, or to be erected, before 1st September next in national schools in Dublin city.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate for inclusion in the Official Report a statement giving the information requested by the Deputy.
