Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of the last year for which figures are available the number of pairs of shoes and boots issued under the Public Assistance Footwear Schemes (a) in the State, and (b) in Dublin city and county, indicating the numbers in respect of which contributions towards the cost were paid by the recipients of the shoes or boots.

The figures in relation to the Public Assistance Footwear Scheme for 1962/63, the latest period for which figures are available, are (a) 43,723 and 33,040, and (b) 3,809 and 1,761.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state in respect of last year the number of persons in receipt of public assistance, and the number of such persons who received free footwear under the Public Assistance Footwear Scheme.

The average number of persons in respect of whom public assistance was paid during the year ended 31st March, 1964, was 29,341. Returns of the numbers who received footwear under the Public Assistance Footwear Scheme for 1963/64 have not yet been received from local authorities. Under the 1962/63 scheme free footwear was issued to recipients of public assistance in 10,683 cases.
