With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 18, 19, 20 and 21 together.

There are 4,868 national schools in the State.

The information in regard to water supply and toilet facilities in national schools is not available in the detailed form sought by the Deputy. The overall position is that about 50 per cent of national schools have water-flushed sanitation. The sanitary facilities in the other 50 per cent consist of filterbed latrines, dry closets or elsan closets. In all cases where there is not already water-flushed sanitation and where water is available every encouragement through generous grants, etc., is given to the school managers to have such sanitation installed.

The information asked for in relation to lighting in the schools is not available.

As regards heating arrangements about 460 schools have central heating, 430 electrical heating and 4,000 have open fires and stoves.
