Vol. 210 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Committee on Court Practices and Procedure.

48.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice when the Report of the Committee on Court Practices and Procedure will be published.

The terms of reference of the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure are very wide and for this reason specifically provide for the making of interim reports on matters appearing to the Committee to merit immediate attention or to warrant separate treatment. As the Deputy will be aware, the First Interim Report of the Committee, which deals with the question of the preliminary investigation of indictable offences, was published on the 21st May. The Committee are at present considering the question of whether the existing right to jury trial in civil actions should be abolished or modified. The Committee's recommendations on this question are expected to form the subject of a second interim report.
