Vol. 211 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meat Supplies for US Forces in Europe.

43.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that Irish meat interests are in danger of losing the very valuable American market in Europe; whether his Department have taken any action in the matter; and, if so, what action.

There have been some reports about the possibility of the American Government, for price or other considerations, purchasing in the United States part or all of the beef required for their forces in Europe. Such a change in policy would mean the reduction or loss to this country of a valuable export trade, but the American Government are entitled to make such a decision. I may add that our exports to the US forces in Europe in the first three months of 1964 were greater than in the same period of 1963.
