Vol. 211 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Water Consumption.

71.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government the average daily consumption of water supplied by the Dublin Corporation, and the daily capacity for which existing filter beds were provided; whether there are any plans to provide additional filter beds; and, if so, when additional filter beds will be provided.

The average daily consumption of water supplied by Dublin Corporation in 1963 was 38.7 mil. gals. The capacity of the existing filter beds varies from 35 to 40 mil. gals. per day, depending on the season of the year. The North Dublin Regional Water Supply Scheme, which will contribute to the city supply, will have filtration plant to deal with 7½ mil. gals. per day for the Dublin area. This scheme is expected to be in operation by Autumn, 1966. In the meantime temporary filtration plant is being provided at Leixlip to enable about 1 mil. gals. per day to be supplied to the area by March, 1965. I am informed that at present samples of the filtered water are analysed every fortnight and bacteriological analyses are done constantly.
