Vol. 211 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Materials in Abbey Theatre Building.

10.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance whether foreign building materials have been or will be used in the building of the Abbey Theatre; in particular, whether the building will be faced with Scottish bricks or other imported material; and if, as satisfactory Irish materials are available, he will stipulate as a condition of making any further payments towards the cost of the Theatre that only Irish materials be used.

As far as possible all building materials being used in the construction of the Abbey Theatre are of Irish origin. The bricks which are being used in the facing of the building are not Scottish. They are manufactured in Northern Ireland.

I am satisfied that the management of the theatre is making every effort to use Irish materials where that is possible and accordingly I do not think it necessary to make the stipulation suggested by the Deputy in the last part of his question.

Mr. Ryan

Has the Minister particulars of the origin of the materials being used?

It would take a long time to go into all these details. There are some items which I believe cannot be got here, if at all, in the same degree of perfection. They are not of any great importance financially.

Mr. Ryan

I shall table another question.
