Vol. 211 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision for Displaced Workers.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what progress has been made, and what schemes have been devised, to provide alternative employment and redundancy payments to workers displaced by modernisation of industry following Government sponsored recommendations on the matter.

As I have already stated in the Dáil, I do not accept the implication that the modernisation of industry must necessarily result in redundancy. On the contrary, it is hoped that modernisation and adaptation will help to maintain existing employment, and possibly to increase employment in a number of industries.

If what the Deputy has in mind is the progress made in regard to the inter-Departmental Committee on retraining and resettlement and the Committee set up by the CIO to consider the question of redundancy arising from conditions of freer trade, the position is that I have received the CIO report only recently and the report of the inter-Departmental Committee is still under consideration.
