Vol. 211 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drunken Driving Tests.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he has yet decided if he will use blood test and breath test analysis to ascertain alcohol content in cases suspected of being drunk when driving.

Legislation involving the use of such tests has been approved in principle by the Government, after consideration of the report of the Commission on Driving while under the influence of Drink or a Drug.

Could the Minister give me any indication of when he will be in a position to introduce legislation?

The legislation has to be prepared. It will probably be in the next session.

Could the Minister say whether it is proposed to use both or either of the tests?

I expect that the legislation will cover both.

And leave an option to use either?

Not an option, one consequent on the result of the other.
