Vol. 211 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Atmospheric Pollution.

29.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice if, having regard to the need to remind owners of mechanically propelled vehicles of the obligation to maintain their vehicles in a condition which will not cause unnecessary poisonous gases to be emitted from engine exhausts, he will have separate statistics compiled in future of the number of persons charged with offences in respect of excessive fumes from vehicles, in view of the increasing concern of medical authorities about the problem of pollution of the atmosphere by such vehicles.

I do not agree that the compilation or publication of separate statistics could have any significant effect as a reminder to the owners of vehicles of their duties in this matter and I see no sufficient reason for singling out these offences for special treatment in the Garda crime returns.
