Vol. 211 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rate Applotment Clerks.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government the rate of pay of rate applotment clerks.

The information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department. Persons engaged on rate applotment work are generally employed as temporary officers. Where so employed they may be paid at the minimum of the scale applicable to the appropriate permanent office.

Would the Minister make it his business to find out if, in fact, the people employed in this type of work are paid a decent rate of pay?

That would not be a matter for the Minister to interfere in.

Surely the Minister will agree that if an employee of the local authority subject to the Minister's Department is not being paid a decent rate, it is a matter which should be looked after by the Minister in charge?

As far as the Minister is concerned they are paid at the minimum of the scale appropriate to the grade.

And he does not care how low the rate is.
