Vol. 211 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Telephone Operators.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government the rate of pay of telephone operators employed by each local authority.

The method of operating telephone services in local authority offices and institutions varies and, in the majority of cases, the persons who operate them are not employed for that work solely or engaged on it for any considerable proportion of their time. There are therefore no standard rates of pay for the work in the local service generally.

So people can be employed by a local authority and the Minister's Department does not care whether they are paid £1 or £10 a week?

It is not the Minister's job to go around fixing rates of pay for employees of local authorities. It is a matter for the local authority.

The Minister's predecessor was anxious some years ago to see that road workers were not paid too much. He is now Tánaiste.
