Vol. 211 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Band.

48.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the pay of members of the Garda Síochána Band.

Members of the Garda Band are paid on the same basis as other members of the force. The rates at present applicable are those set out in the Garda Síochána Pay Order, 1964. (S.I. No. 54 of 1964).

Mr. Ryan

Is there any extra allowance for musical instruments?

There is a boot allowance.

Mr. Ryan

For musicians? Am I to understand there is additional boot allowance for the musicians over the boot allowance given to the other members of the Garda?

There are all sorts of different allowances given to different members of the Force.

Mr. Ryan

Is there a special allowance for boots for the musicians? Is this because they parade or otherwise?

I am informing the Deputy that each member of the band is in receipt of a boot allowance of £6 10/- a year.

Mr. Ryan

Is that not the same allowance as ordinary members get?

If the Deputy wants any further information, he will have to put down a question.

49.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the nature and duration of training in music given to members on entry into the Garda Síochána band.

Members joining the Garda Band are specially recruited for that purpose and, consequently, are capable musicians before attestation to the Force. When not fulfilling some musical engagement and provided the exigencies of the service permit it, band members practise for about three hours each day. This practice period is considered essential in order to maintain the required standard of proficiency.

50.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the qualifications necessary for entrants to the Garda Síochána band.

In addition to the normal qualifications of character, physique and education, members recruited for service in the Garda Band are required to be capable of reading music and competent to play either a brass or a reed instrument or drums.
