Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the number of State cars assigned to Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries, which were involved in traffic accidents within the past twelve months; the persons to whom the cars were assigned; and the dates and locations of the accidents.

The answer to the first part of the question is eleven; the answer to the second part is set out in the form of a tabular statement, which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I will have circulated with the Official Report.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the basis upon which State cars are assigned to Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries; the extent to which they may be used for private purposes; and whether there are any restrictions on their user.

There are no restrictions on the use of cars assigned to Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the total personnel of the transport division of the Garda Síochána servicing and driving State cars for Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and the Attorney General.

There are 20 members of the Transport Section engaged in repairing and servicing the Garda fleet of 413 vehicles, including ministerial cars. No member is engaged exclusively in repairing and servicing these cars.

The number of members engaged as drivers of cars assigned to Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and the Attorney General is 36.

47.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the average annual cost per car of providing a State car with two drivers for Ministers, Parliamentary Secretaries and the Attorney General, including the cost of replacement, running and repairs.

The estimated average annual cost is £3,300.
