Vol. 211 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Duty Element in Motor Car Prices.

5.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance the average proportion of the retail sale price of Irish manufactured motor cars which represents customs and excise duties.

For the great majority of Irish-assembled motor cars customs and excise duties represent between eight per cent and ten per cent of the retail price.

Could the Minister indicate why, although there is no purchase tax here, the cost of motor cars assembled here is roughly at the same level as that in Britain, in view of the fact that customs duty is so low?

That is right. I do not know how the excise duties compare with the purchase tax in England.

Does the Minister not think somebody is making a million out of it?

I do not think so.
