asked the Minister for External Affairs whether he has received any request from the Secretary-General of the United Nations requesting Irish forces serving with the UN Force in Cyprus to remain there after the agreed three month period; and, if so, what reply he has made to such request.

The Government have received a formal request from the Secretary-General of the United Nations that the service of the Irish contingent with the United Nations peace-keeping force in Cyprus be extended until 26th September next on the same terms and at the same strength as at present. The Government have acceded to this request and the Secretary-General has been informed accordingly.
