Vol. 211 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Merchandise Plates.

10.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power (a) the number of new merchandise plates issued in each of the years 1953 to 1963, (b) the names and addresses of those to whom these plates were issued, and (c) the reason for their issue.

I assume that the Deputy's question refers to merchandise licences issued under the Road Transport Acts.

The number of merchandise licences issued in each of the years 1953 to 1963, inclusive was: nil in 1953; one in 1954; five in 1955; two in 1956; 16 in 1957; one in 1958; nine in 1959; four in 1960; three in 1961; nil in 1962; nil in 1963. Full particulars of these licences, including the names and addresses of the licensees, are contained in the Statutory Register of Merchandise Licences which is open to inspection in my Department at all reasonable times.

These licences were issued because, having regard to the transport facilities which were being provided by CIE and licensed hauliers, the additional facilities sought were deemed necessary for the haulage in question.

Could the Minister tell me in respect of what areas licences were granted in 1957?

There were 16 issued in 1957.

Could he specify the areas?

I have not got that readily available.

They were given out for County Mayo because of the election.
