Vol. 211 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Cigarette Advertisements.

3.

asked the Minister for Health whether any decision has been arrived at to prohibit or control the advertisement of cigarettes on radio, TV, or in the newspapers in view of the danger that cigarettes can cause lung cancer in those who smoke them.

A decision has not yet been reached. As I mentioned in introducing the Estimate for my Department on the 4th of this month— Dáil Debates, Volume 210, column 686 —the question of formulating a general code of standards to regulate tobacco advertising is under consideration. Discussions have been initiated between my Department and representatives of the cigarette manufacturers and the other interests concerned, but they are not yet concluded.

Can the Minister give any indication how long it will be before the discussions are concluded?

I could not. After all, we are reasonable men and they have to discuss things amongst themselves.

Is it not a fact that a decision has been arrived at in the United States on foot of much the same information?

I am sorry but this is not the United States.

4.

asked the Minister for Health whether it has been decided to insist that all advertisements for cigarettes or cartons containing cigarettes will carry a notice warning the consumer that their continued use can cause lung cancer.

The answer is "No". I would draw the Deputy's attention to my reply in this House on 7th March, 1962—Dáil Debates, Volume 193, columns 1026 and 1027— to a question on similar lines put by him.
