Vol. 211 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Liability for Income Tax.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance whether in view of the depreciation in the value of money as a result of the continuing increase in the cost of living, he will give sympathetic reconsideration to the arrangement whereby single persons are liable for payment of income tax on incomes over £6 per week.

It is presumed that what the Deputy has in mind is an increase in the allowance for single persons which would raise the effective exemption limit for earned income above the present level of £312 a year or £6 per week. As I pointed out in my reply to a Question by Deputy Oliver J. Flanagan on 11th June, 1964, budgetary considerations preclude the granting at present of such an increase.
