asked the Taoiseach the percentage of the national income spent on education in each of the years 1938, 1948, 1958 and 1963.

Expenditure on education is part of the total expenditure on the gross national product. On account of the difficulty of measuring private expenditure on education, reliable figures are available only for the expenditure on education from public funds. The expenditure on education from public funds as a proportion of gross national product at current market prices in each of the years 1938/39, 1948/49, 1958/59 and 1963/64 is shown in the following table:
