Vol. 211 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mechanical Recording of Court Depositions.

55.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice whether he proposes to adopt the recommendation in paragraph 35 of the First Interim Report on Court Practice and Procedure that mechanical recording apparatus be used when taking depositions; if so, when the necessary equipment will be provided; and when amendments will be made to existing Acts and rules to permit of the use of such mechanical apparatus.

As I mentioned when introducing the Estimates for my Department on 9th June, the Government have adopted the recommendation contained in the minority report of the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure for the abolition of the present system of preliminary investigation of indictable offences.

Will there be an opportunity of debating that decision?

There was an opportunity on the Estimate for my Department but legislation will also be necessary and this will give another opportunity to debate the proposal.
