Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Figures.

16.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of each of the years 1961 to 1964 (1) the average number of new jobs provided, (2) the estimated total number of persons (a) reaching retirement age, (b) leaving rural Ireland and (c) leaving the vocational and primary schools looking for work, and (3) the average number unemployed in each of these years.

As I informed the Deputy in a reply on 21 March, 1963, comprehensive information is not available concerning the total number of new jobs provided in any period.

As regards the estimated number of people reaching the retirement age, it is assumed that this age is 65 years. The estimated number of persons attaining 65 years of age was 11,800 in 1961, 11,400 in 1962, 11,200 in 1963 and 11,200 in 1964.

It is not possible to estimate the number of people leaving "rural Ireland" annually and in fact such estimates are feasible only for inter-censal periods. Neither is it possible at present to give figures for the annual numbers leaving whole time education at the primary and vocational stages, though it is hoped that some estimates in this connection will be available as a result of the OECD Study on Investment in Education, at least for a particular year.

The average numbers of persons on the Live Register at the Local Offices of the Department of Social Welfare on the last Saturday of each month were: 46,782 in 1961; 46,519 in 1962; 50,202 in 1963 and 48,278 in the first nine months of 1964.
