Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Showing of Films Unsuitable for Children.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that a number of films unsuitable for children have been shown in public in recent times; and that there is a strong demand that conditions should be imposed prohibiting their screening in public where children are permitted; and if he will take steps to ensure that such conditions are in future imposed.

I am aware that there is a demand for the introduction of a system of graded certificates under the Censorship of Films Acts, for which there are some sound arguments.

I am aware also, however, that there is a substantial body of responsible opinion opposed to any such development.

The question is one of seeking the balance of advantage. I hold the view which, incidentally, has been shared by all Ministers for Justice, that the balance of advantage is with the present system.

Nonsense.

Unless you want to invite children into them.
