Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Portrane (Dublin) Lands.

39.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that Dublin Health Authority have decided to dispose of farm lands at Portrane, Donabate; whether he has sanctioned this proposal; if he will indicate the acreage concerned; and whether he will consider the sale of this land to the Irish Land Commission for subdivision amongst local smallholders.

I understand that the Dublin Health Authority at a recent meeting agreed in principle to the sale of the farm attached to St. Ita's Hospital, Portrane. My formal consent will be necessary before the actual sale can be completed; such consent has not yet been sought, and when sought, it will not be withheld.

The farm to be sold comprises a number of holdings the total area of which is 700 acres approximately.

I understand that the Dublin Health Authority has notified the Irish Land Commission of its intention to dispose of lands at St. Ita's Hospital, Portrane.

Does the Minister's reply indicate that there has been a change of policy with regard to farming in mental hospitals or is this particular step related only to this particular hospital?

I should say there has been a change in the therapeutic approach. Most people no longer regard farming as being the best form of occupational therapy.

It is a general decision then.
