Vol. 212 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Advertising by Cigarette Companies.

38.

asked the Minister for Health what agreement, if any, has been arrived at between him and the firms involved concerning the continued use of the various communications media by the cigarette-making companies to advertise cigarettes when it is now known that these cigarettes contain substances which can cause cancer of the lung, in addition to being a cause of bronchitis and contributing to the development of coronary heart disease.

I indicated to the House on 4th June when introducing the Estimate for my Department (Dáil Debates, Vol. 210, Col. 686) that the tobacco companies and advertising interests, including Radio Éireann, had been asked to meet my Department to discuss the formulation of a general code to regulate the advertising of tobacco. Discussions have been held in my Department on a number of occasions since and, as announced in today's papers, the tobacco manufacturers are now introducing a code of standards for cigarette advertising on the lines agreed with my Department. I will arrange to have copies òf this code placed in the Library and would like on this occasion to repeat in the House my expression of appreciation of the co-operation shown by the manufacturers and the advertising interests in preparing this code.
