asked the Minister for Finance if he can indicate the amount of work in hands by the Office of Public Works in South-West Cork giving (a) the numbers employed and (b) the amount of work to be completed in this financial year.

Twenty-eight projects of an estimated total value of £600,000 are in progress under the control of the Office of Public Works in South-West Cork, and expenditure in the current financial year is estimated at £200,000.

Included are twenty-four building projects being carried out by contract of which ten are primary schools. Eighteen of these will be completed this year and the expenditure in the year will be nearly £150,000. The number of men employed by the contractors is not readily available.

There are four marine works estimated to cost £235,000, the biggest of which is Castletownbere major fishery station at £230,000 which is only starting. Some 15 men are employed at present. Expenditure in the year will be £50,000 approximately. One job will be completed.

In addition maintenance works giving direct employment to twelve men and costing about £5,500 a year are carried out.
