asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will indicate the amount of State subsidy received by the ESB during the past five years towards the cost of rural electrification; and whether the benefit of this subsidy is reserved for householders in remote rural areas.

The State subsidy received by the ESB between 1st April, 1959 and 31st March, 1964 totalled £4,995,426.

The benefit of the subsidy is available to householders in all rural areas. Under section 5 of the Electricity (Supply) (Amendment) Act, 1962, subsidy is payable at the rate of 75 per cent of the capital cost of connecting premises in rural areas subject to a maximum of £75 in respect of any single dwelling house.
