Vol. 212 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Roscommon Bogs.

17.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if in order to alleviate widespread unemployment and continued emigration he will recommence the development of the bogs, under the aegis of Bord na Móna, in Roscommon.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that it has developed the area knows as Mountdillon Bog in County Roscommon near Lanesboro' for the production of 60,000 tons of sod peat per annum; that it has also under development an area of bog known as Culliaghmore located along the Shannonbridge-Ballinasloe Road; and that it is surveying a range of smaller areas of bog lying west of the Shannon in the area generally between Shannonbridge and Athlone with a view to utilising these bogs for the supply of milled peat to Shannonbridge Power Station. The Board says also that there is a considerable number of other areas of bog land in County Roscommon but they are generally too small for economic development by present techniques.
