Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Point Duty Hours.

37.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that traffic confusion is frequent in Dublin at night time at the junction of O'Connell Street and Abbey Street and at other main central city junctions owing to the absence of pointsmen; and if he will arrange for extension of the present point duty hours.

May I refer the Deputy to the answers given on 4th June and 25th June to similar questions by Deputy Timmons.

Briefly, the position is that the Dublin Corporation hope to provide a system of pedestrian-controlled traffic lights at all junctions on the route from the northern end of Grafton Street to the Parnell Monument. These lights cannot, apparently, be installed before 1966 but in the meantime plans are well advanced for the installation of temporary lights at Nelson Pillar, and the junctions of Westmoreland Street/College Street and D'Olier Street/College Street.

Continuous Garda control has been maintained at all these junctions up to 7 p.m. on weekdays, except Saturdays. A proposal by the Dublin Corporation to have this control extended, pending the erection of lights, has been examined and it has been decided that at two junctions, namely, O'Connell Street/Abbey Street, and at the south side of O'Connell Bridge, continuous control will be maintained until 8.30 p.m.
