Vol. 212 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Company Law Review.

7.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, further to his statement at the College of Commerce, Rathmines, on 27th October, when he expects the present review of company law to be completed; and when he contemplates instituting rules on take-over bids.

While I said, on the occasion referred to by the Deputy, that I was keeping a watchful eye on developments in relation to take-over bids and certain other matters in the field of company law, I did not say that a new review of company law was being undertaken. The present Act (the Companies Act, 1963) came into operation only on 1st April this year and it would be too soon yet to start thinking of general amending legislation. As I indicated in my speech on 27th October, I have received no complaints of substance about the conduct of take-over bids in this country. If this situation should change, however, I would take steps to introduce any legislation that might be necessary in the public interest.
