Vol. 212 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Road Grants.

17.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will take steps to increase the present level of grants to local authorities for county roads.

The already high level of grants for county road improvement schemes has been maintained in counties where half the mileage of these roads has not yet been provided with dust-free surfaces. Where the dust-free percentage exceeds 50 lower levels of allocation are applied in proportion to the excess. I see no necessity for increasing the present level of these grants in counties such as South Tipperary where 82.6 per cent of the county roads have already been made dust-free. The councils of such counties gain by increased allocation of other road grants.
