Vol. 212 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Uniforms of Government Messengers.

3.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance when the present uniform for messengers in the Government Service was designed; and if he will have a new uniform designed and issued with a cut and cloth more suited to the present day.

It cannot be stated with certainty when the basic design of the uniform at present issued to messengers in the Government service was determined. The design has, however, been modified from time to time the last such modification being in 1962.

Questions relating to the improvement of the design and quality of messengers' uniforms are appropriate to be dealt with under the conciliation and arbitration machinery for the civil service. A claim in the matter has been submitted by the Staff Side of the General Council.

Mr. Ryan

Could the Minister say when the claim was submitted?

I do not know whether I can give that information straight off. It was first discussed in March, 1961.

Mr. Ryan

Will the Minister endeavour to have the matter expedited?

It will interfere with the normal procedure in the country.
