Vol. 212 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Traffic Signs in City Streets.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government if there are any proposals to mark city streets in a way that will encourage drivers to drive in lanes, and that will indicate to them when they are leaving a one-way street.

Road authorities have been advised by me as to the road markings and signs to be used for these purposes, the road authority in each case acting with the consent or at the request of the Garda Síochána. In Dublin city, such markings and signs have been provided in a number of instances and further extension of the system is being planned.

Is the Minister aware that there are several streets where there is no indication to people on the one-way street that they have reached the end of it and that traffic has on occasions come, for instance, from Capel Street into Bolton Street on the right hand side around a curve, unaware that they were out of the one-way street? Is there any way we can indicate where the end of the one-way street is?

I shall have that matter looked into but I am sure the Deputy will agree that many people come out on the righthand side for no such cause as that. However, if we can find a way of clearing up this matter, we shall put it into operation as soon as possible.
