Vol. 212 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Murrisk (Mayo) Garda Station.

52.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that there is public concern in the locality involved over the reported decision to close down Murrisk Garda Station, County Mayo; and if he will have the matter re-examined.

I have recently received representations about the closing of Murrisk Garda station.

The question whether a station was needed at Murrisk was under consideration for a considerable time and as the existing premises had fallen into a state of disrepair of late a decision had to be taken whether to close it or to replace it. Having regard to the absence of serious crime in the area, the small volume of police work, generally, and the fact that the Garda authorities were satisfied that the area could be policed satisfactorily from adjoining stations a decision was taken to close Murrisk.

I have re-examined the matter in the light of the representations made to me, and am satisfied that the decision to close the station was the correct one and that the alternative arrangements for the supervision of the area will prove adequate.

Is the Minister aware that the garda at Murrisk at the moment is due to retire in eight months' time and that he is not in good health? Would the Minister at least postpone the implementation of this decision until this garda has in fact retired?

I shall have that aspect of the matter dealt with.

Perhaps, if the Minister sees fit to postpone the implementation of this decision, he will further re-examine the question of closing this station in the light of proposals for the establishment of new hotels and further development in the area?

I think ultimately the station will have to be closed but I will bear the Deputy's request in mind.
