Vol. 212 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford City Garda Strength.

54.

asked the Minister for Justice what is the total strength of the Garda Síochána, including officers and men, in Waterford city; and how many men are at present on duty patrolling the city during the night.

The total strength of the Garda Síochána, including officers and men, in Waterford city is 72.

I do not think that it would be in the interests of the enforcement of law and order to disclose the extent of the police patrols in any particular place. I have been assured by the Commissioner that the night patrols in Waterford city are adequate.

I know what the figure for night patrols is and I shall not disclose it. The Minister should be ashamed of it. He should investigate this matter and he will find that the number of night patrols should be stepped up.

I have been told the number of night patrols is adequate. It would be wrong to disclose the exact figure.

The reason why the disclosure would arouse displeasure is that the figure is so low.
